Welcome to the first edition of the SOUTHERN SPRINGS newsletter. This issue we will give you a brief overview of who we are, what we've accomplished to date and where we intend to go from here. We sincerely hope after reading our newsletter you will be interested in participating on whatever level makes sense for you. We are going to build a vibrant center while respecting and appreciating each person's degree of effort and involvement. So many of us find ourselves overwhelmed with busy schedules and little free time. It's difficult to slow down and take the time to attend to the things that really matter -- mental and physical health, love in our lives, meaningful work, and compassion for our fellows. We know numbers give us strength, and it would help to have a gathering place for all of us actively seeking these things.
Southern Spring's founding board members are either active practitioners in the alternative health community, or people closely allied with the practice of holistic health. Southern Springs will be a holistic learning center where educational and inspiring day-long, weekend and week long workshops will take place. We'll organize workshops to assist in our growth and healing process. And once we've gathered additional strength in membership, we intend to build a physical campus, a nearby oasis in a hurried world.

Benefit Dance
Southern Springs is welcoming all our friends and supporters to our first benefit dance on Saturday evening, May 1st. The Bonnie Edwards Band will be performing their hot tunes and we'll get a chance to dance our socks off. Sounds like Fun? Well, there's more.
We're going to have two open mike spots. The first one will take place an hour before Bonnie's band begins playing and the second will be for a half an hour between the band's sets. This time is set aside for anybody who wants five minutes on stage to highlight their own talents. It'll be a time to tell one of your favorite stories, sing a song or read some of your poetry. If you're a little shy it's OK to perform with a friend or two. However you might want to set it up, we encourage you to go for it.
The show starts at 7:30 PM at the Miccosukee Land Co-op Community Center. We're charging $10 to help raise funds to support our efforts towards building a vibrant learning center here in Tallahassee. Teenagers can attend for $5 and children twelve and under can come as our guests. Southern Springs will provide some light refreshments.
If you feel like being even more generous with your financial support, we'd be very appreciative. All the money we raise is going to a good cause. We will be accepting checks from anyone who would like to become a member. If you choose to join as a member there will be no extra charge for the evening. If you're already a member of Southern Springs, you are welcome to come to the benefit at no charge.
We hope you decide to join us as we celebrate together and begin to watch the adventure of Southern Springs unfold!

Discovering and Developing Your Intuitive Gifts --
A True Healer's Legacy
Expanding the mind's abilities are not limited to a few. We all have special intuitive gifts. The magic comes in awakening them and trusting their guidance in our lives.
In this experiential workshop, psychiatrist and author Judith Orloff shares her life's journey. As an intuitive child, she had abilities she did not understand, and was not encouraged in. She became a respected psychiatrist, and will teach us some of the techniques she utilized to develop her deep intuition.
For therapists, physicians and healers this workshop is an excellent opportunity to develop an additional way to treat clients and patients. For others, this is a unique opportunity to develop and expand personal intuitive ability through lecture, discussion, writing, drawing, dream journals and exercises working with energy. We will learn how to develop our own natural intuitive abilities with a focus on becoming sensitive to special experiences in everyday life, developing mental empathy, deepening healing skills, tuning into messages the body is sending, listening to intuitive guidance in decision making and clarifying and strengthening spiritual beliefs.
Dr. Orloff is an assistant professor of psychiatry at UCLA medical school. Her struggles embracing her gift of heightened intuition are chronicled in her best selling book Second Sight. Since its publication in 1997 she has been helping to transform the face of psychiatry through workshops at medical schools, hospitals, health care forums and mainstream educational institutions. Her current book, Intuitive Medicine is an exploration of the positive impact of awakening intuition in more than fifteen years of her psychiatric practice.
Dr. Orloff will be giving a lecture and book signing at the Unity Church of Tallahassee on Crowder Lane, Friday, May 21st at 7:30 PM. The lecture will focus on "Reclaiming Health and Well Being Through the Use of deep Intuition. There will be a $10 fee for the evening.
Dr. Orloff will also lead a dynamic weekend workshop, Saturday, May 22-Sunday, May 23 at the Executive Suites on Scotty's Lane. The cost of the weekend workshop is $200. If you'd like to register for the workshop or would like more information about it, the lecture or the book signing, please call Southern Springs, (850) 878-8643.

In the Future . . .
Due to the truly amazing heat in the summer in Tallahassee we've decided to skip the months of June, July and August for workshops. Our first workshop in the Fall will be on September 24-26. Dr. Jalaja Bonheim will be coming to spend a weekend with us at Wakulla Springs Lodge. She's written some very interesting books directed towards women, helping them fully reclaim their connection to themselves. Also check out the May edition of New Age Journal for an article by her.
Look for our next newsletter over the summer. We'll have lots more workshops planned. Here is a list of authors, entertainers, and workshop leaders with whom we are negotiating. You may recognize some of the names. Our plan is to reach contract with a number of them for the next year.
Dr. Candace Pert, Don Campbell, Naomi Wolff, Titos Sompa, Marge Piercy, Ysaye Barnwell, Neal Donald Walsh, Gabrielle Roth, Alberto Villodo, Mitchell May, Raymond Moody, Malidoma Some, Jacqueline Small, Elana Avila, Larry Dossey, Barbara Dossey, Mitchell Gaynor.
