THE MONKS ARE COMING
Ten Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India will be sharing compassion and wisdom of the ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, as the new year unfolds, January 5 - 8, 2001.
The monks will be honoring Southern Springs with their presence, while on a fund raising tour of North America. Clothed in richly colored garb, including animal masks, the monks will perform a Tibetan cultural pageant, featuring harmonic overtone chanting of traditional prayers. They will play temple instruments, including horns, flutes, bells, and drums. Delicate hand gestures and other movements will accompany the mystical rituals and multiphonic singing. Each monk, singing three notes simultaneously, plays a part in filling the space with deep resonance, while disseminating the wisdom of this ancient culture.

A BRIEF HISTORY
In 1416 A.D. Drepung Monastic University was founded in Tibet by Jamyang Choje, the closest disciple of the Great Je Tsong Khapa, who was the founder of the Gelukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. At the time, Drepung was the largest Buddhist University in Tibet. At its height, over 3,300 monks from all parts of Tibet, Russia, Mongolia, and other parts of the Himalayan region studied there. Eminent scholars, philosophers, and mystics known throughout Tibet and its neighboring countries were educated at Drepung. Today these gentle, learned Lamas continue to carry Buddha's wisdom and message of inner peace and compassion to the world.
In 1959, at the time of the invasion of Tibet, 5,500 monks had been studying at Drepung Gomang, near Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Only 100 were able to follow His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama into exile in India, with the goal of preserving cultural identity and religion. Ten years later, sixty monks succeeded in re-establishing Drepung Gomang Monastery in a Tibetan settlement in South India, on land donated by the Indian government.

The visit of these monks to Tallahassee is an event that will inspire and elevate the consciousness of all who attend. Southern Springs will be assisting the Drepung Gomang Monastery to raise funds for the continuation of higher learning and the survival of this culture in exile. During the monks’ brief stay, they will be available to perform offerings in private homes for healing and for blessings and purification of homes, on a limited basis for additional fees. Please contact Kaity Power, tour coordinator, at 850-668-9419.
