On November 19, 1998, the process of building Southern Springs Holistic Learning Center in the Tallahassee area formally began. Henry Hall, now vice-president of Southern Springs, and I went downtown and filed the Articles of Incorporation. Few people at that time thought we would be able to bring our vision into reality. Although I was at the forefront, cheering everyone on with enthusiasm, deep inside I was questioning whether we would persevere. I am pleased to say that we have done well these first two years.
In a short period of time we have earned a respected reputation and established a solid identity in the local community. The evening lectures and weekend workshops we have hosted have been inspiring and rewarding for those who have attended. We have brought nationally recognized authors and workshop leaders, as well as some lesser-known but equally skilled presenters, to the Tallahassee area. In the future we plan to offer day-long, weekend, and week-long workshops on the Southern Springs retreat campus (yet to be built). Our program will continue to include local presenters and nationally and internationally recognized teachers. We believe that these workshops will attract folks from throughout Florida and the southeastern United States.
Each year in May we have a day-long celebration benefit featuring workshop leaders from the local community. This event provides a great opportunity to present experiential learning opportunities taking place right here in Tallahassee in the areas of the creative arts, self-development, and healthy living. It is also our way of saying "Thank you" to all our members and staff. Come join us in May.
The search for land on which to build our retreat center is picking up momentum. Once we find the spot for our home, we will recruit volunteers to assist us with some of the work in creating the center and its environment. We look forward to working with anyone who would like to bring his or her own unique energy to this special project.
We are also in the process of applying for grant money to help with salaried positions. Currently, we have only one part-time paid position. Having paid staff is critical for us to remain organized and responsive as we continue to grow. Every day there is more work to do. It is all too easy for not-for-profit organizations unintentionally to overload their staff and volunteers until they lose the energy or desire to contribute their time, or continue helping only due to feelings of guilt or a sense of obligation. Our desire is to develop a caring and relaxed environment, not only for event participants but for volunteers and staff as well.
We believe strongly that Southern Springs will play an important part in enhancing peoples' lives for years to come. It will take much hard work, and sincere commitment from many, in order to realize this vision. As we move forward, we will seek diversity and act with accountability, reliability, and integrity. We are excited about the possibilities, and we welcome the challenges ahead.
